Discussion Summary
What has been done/initiated since the last ISS meeting in September 2008?
• Seismic tomography data successfully collected - 5500 shots to 64 OBSs (EM122 map of larger region than covered by EM300) Contact William Wilcock
• Geomicrobiology / biogeochemistry cruise - 500 fluids and 8 sulfide samples over 2 years
• Sulfide incubator - molecular sequencing, chemistry/temperature correlations
• Reprocessing navigation and sulfide/fluid sampling locations since 1991
• Initiating effort to combine bathymetry data sets (resolve navigation problems)
• NEPTUNE Canada update - node deployed 3 km further away than planned, sensors next year
• Sulfide geochemistry - trace metal distribution, sulfide age with 226Ra, correlation with microbiology
• C1-C3 hydrocarbon gases and fluid chemistry, vapor-brine relationship and storage
• Automated earthquake algorithm, 3 year catalog, focal mechanisms and double difference locations published for 1st year (R. Weekly - rtweekly@u.washington.edu)
• Discrete heat flow measurements 50 High-T processed, 20 low-T unprocessed
• Two-phase hydrothermal flow code - ready for Endeavour
• Acoustic imaging and scintillation to monitor heat flux - instrument development for NEPTUNE Canada
• Thermo-tolerance of Paralvinella, disstribution on sulfide surfaces with T-camera system
What new is needed data?
• Some holes in basalt petrology sampling - a few days to fill
• Need for additional extinct sulfides for dating (the very oldest)
• Still need to address diffuse fluxes. Doable if focus around acoustic imaging experiment
• Sampling restricted in High Rise / Salty Dawg by MPA (link to info on Endeavour MPA - http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/oceans/mpa/Endeavour_e.htm)
What are some of the opportunities for integration?
• Developing models linking AMC, bathymetry, petrology, hydrothermal segmentation - new recognition that this is important.
• Microbial patterns and trophic interactions within and between hydrothermal fields - lots existing samples, may need some additional sampling
• Mining video footage for temporal variations in macrofaunal distributions
• Collating observations of evolution of MEF - southern part is dying
• Linking seismicity / fluid chemistry / biology
• Better coordination of observations (time and space) - take advantage of Neptune Canada, diffuse versus high-T
• Expand application of hydrothermal models (2 phase, reactive transport) to the systems - large and smaller scale.
• Getting fluid chemistry observations into the R2K database will stimulate research.
What are the opportunities for comparison with other sites?
• Differences in upflow zones between EPR and Endeavour
• Understanding the distribution of diffuse vent sites
• Comparisons of microseismicity
How do we maintain momentum?
• Start an Endeavour Listserver
• Solicit and obtain short summaries of progress every 3-6 months
Endeavour Tomography Experiment Update
Very preliminary EM122 maps and grd files of the bathymetry data collected by the Endeavour tomography experiment (August 21 - September 20) are available at http://gore.ocean.washington.edu/downloads/EM122_bathymetry/. There is an MSWord file (part of the cruise report) that details some of the outstanding issues which will be addressed by additional processing in early 2010 (please read it before complaining about the data!). The PIs have requested that LDEO release the Simrad EM122 ".all" files (the swath data) collected by the Langseth immediately so that should become available through the R2K database shortly.
If you are interested in all the history of the opportunist and uninformed (in at least some instances deceitful) efforts of Canadian ENGOs to stop the tomography experiment, check out the discussion on The Panda's Thumb at http://pandasthumb.org/archives/2009/09/more-anti-scien.html#more
